&#8211; The <\/span><b>Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  is one of the most ambitious scientific projects of our time. After its planned commissioning in the year  <\/span><b>2030<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it will have <\/span><b>ten times higher resolution than the Hubble telescope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will fundamentally expand our understanding of the universe.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The focus is primarily on <\/span><b>earth-like exoplanets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose atmospheres are to be examined for traces of life.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A central instrument of the GMT is the <\/span><b>G-CLEF spectrograph (Giant Magellan Telescope &#8211; Large Earth Finder)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  &#8211; a high-precision measuring system that can register even the smallest fluctuations in starlight. In order for such data to be recorded with the required accuracy, the optical components must be positioned in an extremely stable and vibration-free manner.<\/span><\/p><h2> <\/h2><h2><b>High-performance composites from Switzerland<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this demanding task, the <\/span><b>Connova AG<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  from Villmergen (CH) was selected as a technology partner. The Swiss company developed and manufactured  <\/span><b>Holding frame made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which remain absolutely dimensionally stable in the high vacuum of the G-CLEF spectrograph even under extreme temperature conditions. <\/span><b>absolutely dimensionally stable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under extreme temperature conditions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The design specifications were uncompromising:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Almost zero thermal expansion (CTE \u2248 0 K-\u00b9)<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Maximum rigidity with minimum weight<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Long-term structural stability<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>No outgassing in a vacuum<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connova set the standard for this with its <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.connova.com\/en\/composites-for-space\/\">composites for the aerospace industry<\/a><\/span><\/strong> on <\/span><b>ultra-high modulus carbon fibers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a <\/span><b>cyanate ester matrix<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined with <\/span><b>INVAR36 components<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; and that didn&#8217;t just refer to the surface.
